EMANUELLE AROUND THE WORLDEmanuelle Around the World (1. Joe D'Amato made to Bitto Albertini’s Black Emanuelle. Carlos Aguilar’s film guide has a useful entry on this one: “After the stimulating success of Black Emanuelle–itself a consequence of the impact of Jaeckin’s Emmanuelle, what followed was a series on the erotic adventures of its photographer heroine, but with a little more interest and a higher budget. Thus, the present film, far from merely offering sex and tourism as its pilot did, also contains humour, sadism, social concern, feminism, action, luxury and cheesy music, all for the price of one film and in a particularly shapeless mixture.”To Aguilar’s list of ingredients I would add bestiality, politically incorrect Chinese villainy and political cynicism. The device seems strangely akin to that of the Spanish thriller Thesis, made by the cleverly cynical Alejandro Amenabar: that of allocating villainy to characters that will inevitably seem preferable to oneself: horror vs. Emanuelle's perverse outburst / Unleashed perversions of Emanuelle En fait il s'agirait d'un montage entre plusieurs films plus hauts de cette tr Name: Unleashed Perversions of Emanuelle Director: Joe D’Amato Emanuelle: Laura Gemser Type: Black Emanuelle Country: Italy Language: Italian Runtime: 98 Minutes NTSC Uncut Version: Les Films Tricolores (French VHS-Secam). In the manner of a Dirty Harry episode, Emanuelle Around the World kicks off with a largely self- contained episode “establishing” the character, as she travels to India and, in between bouts of sex with casual acquaintances, uncovers a Kamasutra- minded guru (George Eastman) as a fraud. For the rest, the action takes us to Frisco, NY, Rome, Hong Kong and the Middle East. The white slavery business, in fact, is traced back to an oil potentate from the latter region, and given the world’s need for his product, a compromise is finally reached: the white slavers are disbanded, the most immediate culprits killed or brought to the police (ass in the case of a character played by D’Amato himself) but the businessman’s involvement will be silenced. And of course, amidst all this, Emanuelle gets to have lots of sexual encounters, and the story abounds in torture and rape. Once the story proper is over, an epilogue is added in which Emanuelle and Cora, with the help of the former’s UN connections (Ivan Rassimov and Don Powell), manage to be party to a decadent revelry thrown by a U. S. Senator, which culminates with the rape and possible death of a beauty queen. The material authors of this are arrested but otherwise there’s nothing to be done and more abuses will undoubtedly follow. I would also add a risibly casual way of finding excuses for the actresses to disrobe or have sexual encounters with recent acquaintances. Either due to the print known to me or because of desperate post- production decisions, there are some abrupt ellipses (after the rape scene featuring the scarred man –apparently played by Craig Hill, not that I recognised him- and the final moment with Miss Ohio and the group of layabouts). What emerges as most disturbing, in any case, is the off- handedness with which the subjects of rape and white slavery are dealt with, but then, at the end, we are given the genuinely (and strangely) poignant scene in which Miss Ohio is offered by the Senator and his socialite friends to a group of louts. As for Laura Gemser, she is as striking physically as she her reputation claims. Her performance, on the other hand, shows her to be less an actress than a slightly over- professional model –which was her trade before making it to the cinema. She seems to “represent” her character rather than inhabit it and even in her sex scenes, she is less suggestive of passionate commitment than of the cool efficiency of a model at a photograph session. This probably bears on limitations in Gemser’s talent or ambitious, or perhaps simply, a wish to disengage herself from her material, but her detachment, whether intentionally or not, seems to contribute to the idealisation of the Emanuelle character. With Gemser effortlessly sailing through her role, this Emanuelle always seems to find a way out of troubles, finish them off with some bit of moralising and remain ineffably superior to her surroundings. This might explain her preternatural psychological resilience following abusive episodes most people would find traumatic. Even her interest in sex looks impersonal and haughty, like a professional gambler’s interest in cards, and it is telling that she has no sex with those people she is friends with, such as the Rassimov character. Laura Gemser remains an unique beauty in the. Emanuelle, Queen of the Desert 1983 Love Is Forever; Unleashed Perversions of Emanuelle; Emanuelle. EMANUELLE(Laura Gemser) - Collection 1974-1984. Here at least, she is referred to at one point as . The Severin set contains a rough video filming of D’Amato at the Eurofest in England, with the physically unprepossessing filmmaker, his mouth all but obscured by his nose, sounding a bit hamstrung by having to speak in English but coming across as relaxed, unpretentious and genuinely likeable. There is also an interview with composer Nico Fidenco, who after some interesting Spaghetti Western efforts, evolved towards the lounge music stuff of Italian erotica. Fidenco speaks very strongly and confidently and gives us some funny anecdotes on Morricone’s workaholic (“stakhanovite” is the word he uses) lifestyle and resulting his penchant for falling asleep at social gatherings. Severin’s presentation of the film itself is good but variable, with inferior French material used in the credits, occasional blemishes and a certain proclivity for unsteady, jerky motion.
